The wall monitor flickered to life as the Russian premiere, Igor Surkov, walked up to a podium. He wore a dark suit with a red tie. His face, pockmarked with scars, was framed by a thick, singular brow. His flabby jowls hung low on his cheeks. His eyes drooped, but they twinkled with the fierce power of a lifelong dictator.

He began speaking and a voice translated.

“The Russian republic is honored to announce a long-term strategic partnership with the Celledon Mercantile Corporation. The military has secured exclusive rights to some of their latest weapons packages which will guarantee the security of the Russian people for decades to come. This is in response to the brazen attacks by the American imperialists on the peaceful Celledon research fleet.”

“Research fleet,” said George. “That’s creative.”

Surkov continued. “I am pleased to tell you today that the patriots that launched the counterattack on the American aggressor, President Gardner, are safe at home and resting comfortably. They received a hero’s welcome and will be issued the Order of Lenin for their brave and heroic actions over Earth.

“Celledon has thanked them for their initiative in protecting the people of the solar system from a man who was poised to become the most tyrannical dictator in human history.”

“I don’t fucking believe it,” said George. “They have the gall to brag about murdering a head of state.”

Cougar was waiting for a diatribe about the Russian scum and how they needed to take revenge, but it never came. George, it would appear, was a bit more measured in his emotions and kept himself in check.

“Where’s their capital right now?” George asked.

“Cosmograd Station,” said Cougar. “At present, it is orbiting Titania. It’s the largest moon over Uranus.”

“I know. Can we get to them?”

“Not without a fleet, sir.”

“What about the Boston?” George asked.

“That’s still in testing, sir. Plus, we may not want to invite the attention that could bring.”

“Right. One thing at a time. Any targets of value here on Earth?”

“No. They never bothered to clean up after themselves when the bulk of the ruling class left on that broken-down colony ship. The old country is a wasteland of dirt farmers and scrappers.”

“Something like twenty million people starved when they took off?”

“It was twenty-five, actually. Their transportation infrastructure crumbled and corruption went through the roof, even by their standards.”

“What a shit country. Nonetheless, I want options, Cougar. Find a way to strike back at them. Get creative. I don’t care what it takes, even if it involves the Boston, once she’s ready.”

“Understood, sir.”

George sat back in his chair and stared out the window, ignoring the leather-faced old man on the monitor. He’d clearly heard all he needed to hear.

“Call me when Quist has an update,” said George as he stood up.

Cougar rose to meet him. “Of course, sir.”

George gave a quick nod and walked out of the small conference room, back toward his private quarters, where his family was sitting and playing a card game. He shut the door.

The scene made Cougar think about his own family and how little he’d seen them over the last few years.
